Self Portraits and Portraits Preview

Tip #1: Bring Something to Focus On
Place something about the same height and distance as your self in your self portrait, so it can focus better and the picture comes out more clear.

Tip #2: Set the timer high and Use Burst
Use the timer on your camera so you aren't pressing the button and running fast to the position you want because your picture will come out ugly. Set the timer high so you have time to figure out what your going to do, and the picture comes out good.

Tip #3: Lighting
Using your flash can make your pictures look ten times better. Because photography is about capturing light to produce a great picture.

Rules of Photography Part 2

Rule of Thirds

Balance

Lines

Symmetry and Patterns

Viewpoint

Background

Depth

Cropping

Avoiding Mergers

The Three Pillars of Exposure: Aperture, ISO, Shutter Speed

Aperture
F2.8

F16

1. What part of the body should we closely relate aperture?
I think our eyes closely relate aperture because if you put something close to your face your eyes can "focus" on that object.

2. The smaller the Aperture, the higher the Aperture f-number.

3. The higher the aperture f-number, the sharper the background comes out with the picture.

Shutter Speed
High Shutter Speed

Low Shutter Speed

Reasonable Light
A.) the dunking booth - Fast shutter speed
B.) the food eating contest - slow shutter speed
C.) the rock climbing wall - slow shutter speed
D.) someone working at a booth - slow shutter speed
E.) the DJ/MC working at the middle of the circle - medium shutter speed
F.) The Diamond Performance - medium shutter speed

Not Enough Light
A.) the dunking booth - medium shutter speed
B.) the food eating contest - fast shutter speed
C.) the rock climbing wall - medium shutter speed
D.) someone working at the booth - medium shutter speed
E.) the DJ/MC working at the middle of the circle - fast shutter speed
F.) the diamonds performance - fast shutter speed

ISO
ISO 200

ISO 3200

1. The advantages of shooting with a higher ISO setting at a football game at night is the image will be more clear, and sharp.
2. To use the lowest ISO (100 or 200) because when there is light you should use the lowest ISO.
3. You should always increase your ISO when there is not enough light in the environment that you are at, so the camera quickly captures the image.

F4: 1/125
F5.6: 1/60
F8:1/60
F11:1/60
F16:1/30
F22: 1/8

Mural Photos

Academic Shoot Reflection

1. What challenges did you encounter while trying to get the photos following the rules I set out for you?
I encountered the challenges of trying to find the right pictures for the specific rule.

2. What technical aspects of photography or the assignment in general (focus, framing, holding the camera, etc.) did you find yourself thinking about the most?
I think I'm pretty comfortable with the camera. I know how to focus, hold the camera, and applying  the specific rules.

3. If you could do the assignment again, what would you do differently now that you know some basic rules of photography?
I would take time to position the subject as best as I could so the rule would apply.

4. What things would you do the same?
Focusing the camera, and holding the camera.

5. When you go out with your next set of prompts, which rule do you think will be the easiest to achieve?
I think the easiest rule if framing, simplicity, and lines, and rule of thirds.

6. Which rule do you think will be the hardest to capture?
I think the hardest rule was balance.

7. What rule are you still not totally clear on and what can you do to figure out what that rule is?
I know the rules very well, and its pretty easy.

Academics Shoot

 Framing
1) I think I followed the rule well because the two computers make a "frame" to focus on the girl using the computer.
2) The subject on the picture is the girl.
3) I think the subject is very clear to other people, you just have to know what the rules are.
4) I think I followed the rule well.
Simplicity
1) I followed the rule well because the subject is in front of a clear background.
2) The subject is the student reading the book.
3) I think people can tell what the subject is in the picture.
4) I think I could have focused the picture better.
 Lines
1) I think I could have done better following the rule, but you can still see plenty of lines.
2) The subject is the student reading the book.
3) Im sure everybody can see what the subject is.
4) I think I could have placed the subject in a better position to see the rule better.
 Rule of Thirds
1) I think I followed the rule well because the girl is on the "line" on the Rule of Thirds.
2) The subject is the girl putting up the books on the shelves.
3) The subject is very clear in this photo.
 Balance
1) I think I followed the rule well because the person is "balanced".
2) The subject is the student shooting the basketball.
3) I think the subject is rather clear, you can tell what he is doing.
4) I think this photo would be better if the other people were not around, just him.
Avoiding Mergers
1) I think I followed the rule rather well. I was taking a picture of the boys shooting, but the girl in the bottom left merges into the photo.
2) The subject is the student in the red shirt shooting the ball.
3) I think its pretty clear what the subject is, but because the girl merges into the photo your looking at everybody.

Academics Shoot Preview

The Story

I think this picture tells a good story because it brings people together remembering or supporting something that they care about. And it can bring the emotion out in people and it attracts people.

Action and Emotion

I think this picture shows the most action because the 2 girls might have been trying some science experiment, but it went kinda wrong and made a reaction. But by the girls faces they are having fun, and they're amazed.

Filling the Frame

I think this picture "fills the frame" as most interesting because it looks mysterious with the smoke, and the welder's masks. The fire from the blowtorch makes a light that makes you focus on the 2 people and what they are doing.

I picked this photo because I am a fan of black and white photos.

Simplicity is used in this picture because most of the floor is black, and the person is in the center. And you can easily see that he is reading books, or studying.

Mural Project Review

I would make the theme from the ABLE academy, and what it has to offer. I would include pictures from the Criminal Justice classes, as well as Business.

I think other students would care about this theme because there might be some students who might have interest in the ABLE academy but don't know about it. There could be pictures of CSI. CSI is where some seniors have the opportunity to join a program where they go to jails to experience working in an environment like that after high school.

Some advantages would be that the phone would be a good tool for this project because you can edit the pictures you take. Disadvantages would be that you have to much access to your phone while in class.

Using the SLR camera is good because they can take very high resolution pictures. Disadvantages would be that you take pictures but you have to return to the computer to upload any pictures.

I think we should use SLR cameras because I feel more comfortable using that instead of my phone. And other teachers or administration might not agree with us using our phones.

Great Black and White Photographers Part 3

The girl poking her head out of the water caught my attention because it looks like she's relaxing in the water. I chose this picture because it looks so cool in black and white.

I see that she feels relaxed.
I smell wet grass after it has rained.
I hear nothing but dead silence.
I feel the cold water that she's swimming in.
I taste the cold air.

I think if there was a big collage of all the black and white pictures he took and arrange them to create one image.

Africa Black and White

1. What was your favorite photo?

2. This was my favorite photo because I like that it is black and white, and the Cheetah is protecting her cubs and thats why it is my favorite photo.

3. I think this photo is Simplicity because the background is white with a touch of gray's and black's. But the background is clear enough for you to tell what the photographer wants you to look at.

4. A) He uses a Pentax 67ll with only two fixed lenses.
B) To show the being of the animals, before they are no longer there.
C) His hope is to show how beautiful animals are and how we should protect them.
D) "I'm not interested in creating work that is simply documentary or filled with action and drama, which has been the norm in the photography of animals in the wild."

Avoiding Mergers

I chose this picture because the lady on the left is merging into the picture and that kinda messes up the picture in a way because it just throws off what your really supposed to be looking at.

Framing

I chose this picture because the window creates a natural frame, and it frames the guy sitting in the truck. And you can tell what your supposed to look at because the window directs you to the guy.

Balance

I
I chose this picture because it shows balance. I think it shows balance because the windows create an oval looking shape and there are many rectangular shapes in the photo as well.

Lines

I chose this picture for lines because you can see many "lines" in the building that the plane crashed in. This picture will catch your eye very quickly because of the color it has.

The Rule of Thirds

I chose this picture because the soldier is in the Rule of Thirds and also the ambulance.

Simplicity

I chose this picture because there is a clear blue background as the sky, and the tower that is attacked by an airplane is right in the middle, so the tower is what attracts you to the picture.

Elements of Art and Principles of Design

Line - Marks made by a pointed tool: brush, pencil, pen, etc. Lines can vary in width, direction, curvature, length, or color.

Shape - Shapes are formed wherever the ends of a continuous line meet. Geometric shapes such as circles, triangles or squares have perfect, uniform measurements and don't often appear in nature. Organic shapes are associated with things from the natural world, like plants and animals.

Color - Color wheels show the primary colors, secondary colors, and the tertiary (intermediate) colors. They also show the relationships between complementary colors across from each other, such as blue and orange; and analogous (similar or related) colors next to each other such as yellow, green, and blue. Black and white may be thought of as colors but, in fact, they are not. White light is the presence of all color; black is the absence of reflected light and therefore the absence of color.

Value (Tone)  - Value, or tone, refers to dark and light; the value scale refers to black and white with all gradations of gray in between.  Value contrasts help us to see and understand a two-dimensional work of art.

Form - Form describes objects that are three-dimensional, having length, width, and height.

Texture - Texture can be rough, bumpy, slick, scratchy, smooth, silky, soft, prickly--the list is endless.  Texture refers to the surface quality, both simulated and actual, of artwork.

Space - Space refers to distances or areas around, between, or within components of a piece. Space can be positive (white or light) or  negative (black or dark), open or closed, shallow or deep, and two-dimensional or three-dimensional.
